Pedestrian killed Tuesday night in collision on 405 Freeway in Long Beach
LONG BEACH, CA, (June 24, 2025) - A 40-year-old man was tragically killed Tuesday night in a pedestrian crash on a freeway transition road in Long Beach, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Kurtis Haynes, 40, was tragically killed in a vehicle-versus-pedestrian accident in Long Beach on Tuesday night, according to authorities.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Kurtis Haynes.
CHP said the crash, which involved two vehicles, occurred just before 9 p.m. on the northbound 405 Freeway near the 710 Freeway. It remains unclear if Haynes was struck by both vehicles.
Haynes, whose city of residence was not known, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the fatal collision.
CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED
Pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists—often referred to as vulnerable road users—face a disproportionately high risk of severe or fatal injuries in collisions, especially when struck by heavier vehicles like SUVs. According to Safe Streets Data, although just 14 percent of crashes in Long Beach involve these users, they account for a staggering 65 percent of all traffic deaths and serious injuries.
“In most instances, pedestrians possess the right of way when crossing an intersection or a street, regardless of whether they are in a marked crosswalk,” said Candice Bond, a veteran pedestrian accident attorney and Managing Partner at Bond Legal.
Bond emphasized that in tragic cases like this, an independent legal investigation is essential to fully understand the circumstances and safeguard the rights of the victim’s family.
WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM
“It is almost always a driver’s duty to yield to any pedestrian,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal. The family of Kurtis Haynes may be entitled to a wrongful death claim.
“Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of income and companionship, pain and suffering, funeral expenses, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident,” said Bond.
“Insurance companies often try to pressure victims to settle for a quick payout for far less than the case is worth,” Bond noted. “However, an attorney will vigorously advocate for their client to ensure that they are treated with respect and compensated fairly.”
