Single-car accident on Highway 49 results in two fatalities, one injury

PLACERVILLE, CA, (August 10, 2025) - Sally Bishop, 72, was one of two people tragically killed in a rollover accident Sunday evening south of Placerville, authorities said. The fatal crash occurred on Highway 49, just south of Crystal Boulevard.

fatal crashSally Bishop, 72, and the driver of the vehicle she was riding in were killed Sunday evening in a rollover crash on Highway 49 south of Placerville, according to the California Highway Patrol.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a 2009 Nissan Pathfinder carrying three occupants struck an embankment at around 7:15 p.m., causing the vehicle to overturn and block the roadway. Bishop, who was seated in the front passenger seat, and the driver were both ejected from the SUV. Sadly, both died from their injuries at the scene.

The third occupant, a rear passenger, suffered minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The incident remains under investigation by CHP.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Though relatively rare, rollover accidents account for a disproportionately high number of traffic fatalities due to their severity and the increased risk of occupant ejection. Crashes in which a vehicle rolled over accounted for 28% of all passenger vehicle occupant deaths in 2023, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

While the cause and liability of the crash are being investigated, Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, said that it is imperative to have an independent investigation conducted by a seasoned attorney.

“In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview important witnesses, analyze any surveillance video from the scene of the crash, and obtain phone and texting records of the liable party,” said Bond, a national analyst for The Legal Advocate.

“Time is of the essence in cases such as this one, and the victim’s family must ensure that evidence is reviewed efficiently.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family members of Sally Bishop may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident.

“We understand that losing a loved one is not only a deeply emotional loss but also an economic one,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “If you have lost a loved one due to someone else’s negligence, contact a wrongful death attorney and get the guidance needed to obtain the justice you deserve.”

“Insurance companies may try to take advantage of your lack of knowledge of the law and offer a low settlement or deny your claim altogether. An attorney can protect your rights and ensure that you are not taken advantage of.”
