Pickup Truck Driver Killed in Early Saturday Morning Crash at La Costa Avenue and Piraeus Street
CARLSBAD, CA, (August 09, 2025) - An alcohol-related two-vehicle crash early Saturday morning in Carlsbad left one person dead and another facing serious criminal charges.
Philip Webb was arrested on suspicion of DUI after crashing into a pickup truck and fatally injuring its driver early Saturday morning in Carlsbad.
The Carlsbad Police Department reported that at around 5:20 a.m., a Subaru driven by 33-year-old Philip Webb of Oceanside collided with a Nissan pickup truck at the intersection of La Costa Avenue and Piraeus Street.
The pickup truck driver was taken to a nearby hospital but later died from their injuries. Webb was arrested on suspicion of DUI causing injury or death and vehicular manslaughter. The investigation is ongoing.
DUI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION
Every year, on the roads of the United States, hundreds of people are killed and thousands seriously injured in drunk driving crashes—crashes that are 100% preventable. Alcohol consumption considerably diminishes reaction time, impairs judgment, and affects motor skills, which compromises drivers' ability to operate a vehicle safely.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 1,479 people lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes involving alcohol in the state of California in 2022.
An independent investigation will be required to learn other potential factors in the case, such as blood-alcohol content levels.
Candice Bond, an experienced DUI accident attorney, was interviewed and provided her thoughts on incidents such as this.
“Separate from criminal charges, a victim may be entitled to compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party, said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview important witnesses, analyze any surveillance video from the scene of the crash, and obtain phone and texting records of the liable party. Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide an injured victim during this difficult time, protecting their legal rights, while ensuring that a driver who takes the wheel under the influence is held accountable for their actions.”
WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM
Pending the investigation, the family of the victim may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Family members can seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident such as this.
“The loss of a loved one in an accident brings immense stress and sorrow,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.
“We recognize the challenges families face, and protecting their rights is crucial. A wrongful death attorney will monitor the investigation closely to ensure that the family’s legal rights and best interests are fully safeguarded.”
