Head-on Collision poster.Thursday morning, a GMC Sierra driver was critically injured when their vehicle was struck head-on by a Toyota driven by Muafak Abukarsh on State Route 4 in Discovery Bay.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that 30-year-old Muafak Abukarsh was driving a westbound Toyota Camry on California State Route 4 around 10:19 a.m. when he crossed over the center lines and collided head-on with an eastbound GMC Sierra pickup truck.

The GMC driver sustained severe injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Emergency responders pronounced Abukarsh dead at the scene.

Officials say their investigation into the crash is ongoing.

HEAD-ON CRASH INVESTIGATION

Head-on accidents are among the most serious motor vehicle crashes due to the force involved between two drivers usually traveling at a high speed. The most common cause of head-on accidents is driver error. However, they are also caused by speeding, distracted driving, drunken driving, poor road design, inexperienced drivers, and confusion from the driver.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 2.2 million people were injured in motor vehicle crashes nationwide in 2023.

“Contributing factors to be examined include road conditions, visibility, and lighting,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes needed to help piece together what happened. All of these resources are necessary for helping clients receive monetary compensation for damages or a loss following a collision,” said Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney.

“Time is of the essence in cases such as this, and the victim’s family must ensure that evidence is reviewed efficiently.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

The victim may be entitled to pursue a personal injury claim pending the results of an investigation.

Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, explained, “Victims involved in a collision often pursue a personal injury claim to cover medical expenses, future treatment, lost income, emotional distress, and pain and suffering.”

“Insurance companies can be notoriously indifferent to the growing costs an injured person may face. An attorney can step in to protect victims, ensuring insurance companies are held accountable for their mistakes,” she added.
