Two dead and one injured in Monday night rear-end collision on Atlantic Avenue

BROOKLYN, NY, (September 01, 2025) - A Labor Day collision in Brooklyn's Cypress Hills neighborhood claimed the lives of two people and left another injured, authorities said.

Motorcycle Accident-Poster.Mirella Vega was fatally injured Monday night when the motorcycle she was riding as a passenger collided with an SUV on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn.

The New York City Police Department reported the crash occurred around 8:10 p.m. on Atlantic Avenue when a westbound Harley-Davidson motorcycle struck the rear of a Mercedes-Benz SUV that was turning left at Elton Street.

Mirella Vega, 42, a passenger on the motorcycle, was transported to Brookdale University Hospital, where she later died. The 42-year-old motorcycle driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Mercedes driver was hospitalized and listed in stable condition.

MOTORCYCLE CRASH INVESTIGATION

Motorcyclists must be even more cautious with a passenger on board due to the way the bike handles.

Over 6,300 motorcyclists were killed on American roads in 2023, per National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data. Those crashes represented 15% of fatal crashes over the course of the year. In the state of New York, 201 people lost their lives in motorcycle accidents in 2023, according to the same NHTSA report.

“Motorcycle riders are arguably the most vulnerable motorists on the roadways, given the fact that there are no airbags or sturdy windows to protect them from an impact,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

"Blind spots, inexperienced drivers, and distracted motorists often cause these types of collisions. An accident reconstruction team and even motorcycle manufacturing experts are oftentimes needed as well to help ultimately piece together what happened," Bond, an experienced motorcycle accident attorney, added.

"All of these resources are necessary for helping clients receive monetary compensation for damages following a collision. Your lawyer has the resources to hire expert witnesses, conduct drivers' background checks, locate witnesses to the crash, and review applicable insurance coverage, " said Bond, who is a national legal analyst for The Legal Advocate.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Mirella Vega could pursue a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident such as this.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“We understand just what families must go through, and having their rights protected is vital. A wrongful death lawyer will stay updated on the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. An attorney can protect victims from large insurance companies and their team of lawyers while diligently examining the facts of the accident. An attorney will vigorously advocate for a family who has lost a loved one, ensuring that their legal rights are protected.”
