LOS ANGELES, CA, (June 21, 2025) - A tragic pedestrian collision in downtown Los Angeles early Saturday morning claimed the life of 30-year-old Matthew Himendigger.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the incident occurred just before 2 a.m. at the intersection of South Main and East Seventh streets. Himendigger was struck by a Toyota Prius, which reportedly dragged him for at least a block before Los Angeles Fire Department personnel were able to free him.
He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The driver of the Prius was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Police say the investigation remains active.
CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED
The rising popularity of larger, heavier vehicles has contributed to a troubling increase in pedestrian fatalities across the U.S. These vehicles, due to their size and design, are more likely to strike pedestrians in the torso or head—leading to more severe or fatal outcomes. In just the first half of 2024, there were 3,304 pedestrian deaths nationwide, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA).
“In most instances, pedestrians possess the right of way when crossing an intersection or a street, regardless of whether they are in a marked crosswalk,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.
“It is always a driver’s duty to yield to any pedestrian,” she added.
Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney, emphasized that in fatal incidents such as this, an independent investigation by a skilled legal team is crucial to preserving evidence, determining liability, and protecting the rights of the victim’s family.
WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM
Pending the results of the investigation, the family of Matthew Himendigger may be entitled to a wrongful death claim for the loss of love and companionship.
“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.
“We understand just what families are forced to go through, and having their rights protected is vital. A wrongful death lawyer will stay updated on the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.”
