One dead, one injured after driver runs red light at Route 5 & 20 and Hickox Road
CANANDAIGUA, NY, (August 27, 2025) - A two-vehicle crash Wednesday morning left one man dead and a child injured, authorities said.
A child was injured Wednesday morning when a box truck ran a red light at Route 5 & 20 and Hickox Road in Canandaigua, striking an SUV.
The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office reported that 40-year-old Jonathan Stills, of Lima, was driving a westbound box truck on Route 5 & 20 when he ran a red light at Hickox Road and collided with a northbound SUV shortly before 11 a.m. The truck then struck a utility pole before coming to a stop.
A child in the SUV suffered a shoulder injury and was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital. Stills was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
CRASH INVESTIGATION
Box trucks weigh significantly more than passenger cars or SUVs, and accidents involving such large vehicles can have catastrophic outcomes.
According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), approximately 40 percent of car collisions take place at road intersections. The cause is usually related to running a stop sign or a stoplight. Some of the reasons drivers blow through lights include impatience, reckless driving, and distracted driving.
Candice Bond, an experienced commercial accident attorney, said that in such cases, it is imperative to have an independent investigation conducted promptly to protect the rights of a victim.
"Commercial vehicle crashes are often complex, and many factors can play a role in these types of accidents," said Bond, who is a Managing Partner of Bond Legal.
"A skilled attorney can protect victims from trucking companies, which often send their own investigators to crash sites and possess a variety of resources they can utilize to defend a negligent truck driver.
"Your lawyer can advocate for you by hiring expert witnesses, conducting driver background checks, locating witnesses to the crash, and reviewing applicable insurance coverage, while carefully guiding a victim through the legal process."
PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM
The injured child may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim pending the outcome of the investigation.
Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, said, “Injured victims involved in a collision often seek a personal injury claim to cover the cost of medical bills, future medical care, loss of income, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering.”
“Insurance companies can be notoriously unconcerned with the mounting costs an injured party may face. An attorney can help. We protect victims of these tragedies daily, ensuring that insurance companies are held accountable,” Bond added.
