Woman taken into custody after pedestrian collision on Old Woman Springs Road

LANDERS, CA, (August 12, 2025) - A 41-year-old Yucca Valley man lost his life Tuesday afternoon in a tragic accident in Landers.

A 41-year-old Yucca Valley man was tragically killed in an accident Tuesday afternoon in Landers.Detrick Dewayne Kelley was killed in a collision with a woman driving a Toyota Camry on Old Woman Springs Road near La Brisa Drive.

The California Highway Patrol reported that at about 2:30 p.m., a 41-year-old Yucca Valley woman was driving a Toyota Camry southbound on Old Woman Springs Road near La Brisa Drive when she made an unsafe turn onto the shoulder. The vehicle struck Detrick Dewayne Kelley, who was standing near his truck on the roadside.

Kelley, the owner of KK Rents Equipment Rental, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said the driver was under the influence at the time of the crash. She was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI causing bodily injury and vehicular manslaughter.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support the Kelley family during this difficult time.

FATAL ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Authorities are investigating the crash, the second fatal collision on Old Woman Springs near Pipes Canyon Road in less than a month. On July 19, Michael Lopez was killed in an early morning collision. It's the latest sad example of the dangers in people walking on foot.

California, in fact, remained the state with the highest number of pedestrian fatalities. In 2019, California had 1,020 pedestrian traffic fatalities, increasing to 1,026 in the year 2020.

Candice Bond, Managing Partner with Bond Legal and a national analyst for The Legal Advocate, said that all potential variables should be examined in an independent investigation by a reputable law firm.

Of course, impaired drivers can cause catastrophic results on our roads. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, about 37 people die in drunk driving crashes each day, and about 32% of all traffic crash fatalities in the United States involve drunken drivers, meaning they had a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of .08 or higher.

Said Bond, “An accident reconstruction team is sometimes needed to help piece together what happened. All of these resources are necessary for helping clients receive monetary compensation for damages or a loss following a collision.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family of Detrick Dewayne Kelley may be entitled to a wrongful death claim for damages including loss of love and companionship, funeral expenses, emotional distress, and pain and suffering.

“Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide a family through this difficult time while protecting their rights,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

Bond added, “Insurance companies often try to pressure victims into settling quickly for far less than they deserve. An attorney will fight tirelessly to ensure the family is treated with dignity and receives full and fair compensation.”
