A bicyclist was tragically killed Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle on East Valley Parkway, according to the Escondido Police Department. The victim has been identified as Robert Cosio by the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.
Robert Cosio was fatally struck in a vehicle vs. bicycle crash Saturday night on East Valley Parkway in Escondido, authorities said.
The crash occurred shortly after 9 p.m., approximately 100 feet west of the intersection with Ash Street. Preliminary reports indicate Cosio was struck by a Honda Accord while crossing the roadway. He died from blunt force injuries, officials said.
The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
No further details have been released at this time.
CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED
Unlike occupants of motor vehicles—who benefit from seat belts, airbags, and structural protection—bicyclists remain highly exposed and at increased risk during collisions. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 1,105 bicyclists were killed in traffic crashes in 2022, marking a 13% rise from 2021.
“Bicyclists are especially vulnerable on the road, and various factors can contribute to devastating accidents,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and a seasoned bicycle accident attorney.
“To determine liability and pursue justice, it’s crucial to identify the exact cause of the crash. An attorney can examine insurance coverage, gather witness statements, retain experts, and conduct independent reviews,” Bond added. “Families deserve clarity, guidance, and protection through this painful process.”
She emphasized the importance of launching an independent investigation quickly to secure vital evidence before it’s lost or compromised.
WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM
Pending the outcome of official investigations, the family of Robert Cosio may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. In the aftermath of a catastrophic accident, surviving loved ones can seek compensation for emotional distress, pain and suffering, and the loss of companionship.
“Grieving families are often overwhelmed by the legal complexities that follow a tragic loss,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.
“An experienced attorney can serve as a compassionate advocate, helping guide families through this difficult time and ensuring that their rights are protected and they receive the compensation they deserve,” Bond added.
