Vernon Avenue Crash on Sunday Claims Life of Cyclist, Officials Report
VERMONT SQUARE, CA, (July 13, 2025) - A bicyclist was tragically killed early Sunday morning in the Vermont Square neighborhood of Los Angeles, according to local authorities.
Jonatan Perez, 29, was killed early Sunday morning in a bicycle-vehicle collision in the Vermont Square neighborhood of Los Angeles, according to police.
The crash occurred at the intersection of Vernon Avenue and Figueroa Street at approximately 12:50 a.m. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office later identified the victim as Jonatan Perez, 29.
Preliminary reports suggest that a vehicle traveling southbound on Figueroa Street collided with Perez as he was riding eastbound on Vernon Avenue. After striking the bicyclist, the vehicle then crashed into two parked cars.
Perez died at the scene due to the severity of his injuries. The driver, described as a man in his early 30s, sustained major injuries and was transported for medical treatment.
The Los Angeles Police Department is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Anyone with information is urged to contact authorities.
CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), 1,155 bicyclists were killed in crashes involving motor vehicles in 2023. Fatalities were most common during the months of September, October, and July (11%), followed by August (10%).
“Bicyclists are particularly vulnerable on the road, and many factors can contribute to serious crashes,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and an experienced bicycle accident attorney.
Bond emphasized the importance of prompt and thorough investigations in fatal crash cases involving cyclists.
“It is imperative to determine the exact cause of these types of accidents,” she said. “An attorney has the resources to review applicable insurance coverage, hire expert witnesses, run background checks, and locate witnesses. We carefully guide the victim’s family through the process.”
Bond also noted that independent investigations are crucial to preserving evidence that could otherwise be lost.
“In addition to the official police report, an attorney will carefully examine what may have contributed to the crash,” she added.
WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM
Pending the results of any investigations, the family members of Jonatan Perez may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Survivors of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident such as this incident.
“Grieving families of victims are sometimes overwhelmed by the legal processes that are in place to protect their rights,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.
“An attorney can be a valuable and compassionate resource to help guide a family during this difficult time and ensure that those left behind receive the restitution they are entitled to.”
