Deadly crash occurred on 405 Freeway north of Moraga Drive, officials say
LOS ANGELES, CA, (June 23, 2025) -
A devastating multi-vehicle crash early Sunday morning claimed the lives of an LAPD sergeant and a 34-year-old man, Jesus Garcia, on the San Diego (405) Freeway.
Jesus Garcia, 34, was fatally struck Monday morning while standing outside his disabled vehicle on the San Diego (405) Freeway, according to Los Angeles police.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 2 a.m. on June 23, just north of Moraga Drive. The LAPD sergeant, whose name has not yet been released, had stopped his marked patrol vehicle with emergency lights activated to assist Garcia, whose Toyota pickup was disabled in the HOV and No. 1 lanes.
As the sergeant exited his vehicle to render aid, both he and Garcia—who was standing outside his truck—were struck by a Nissan sedan that crashed into the patrol vehicle. Garcia died at the scene, while the sergeant was rushed to UCLA Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Officials are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
A GoFundMe page has been launched to support Garcia’s family during this difficult time.
CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED
Crashes like the one that claimed the lives of Jesus Garcia and a veteran LAPD sergeant are heartbreaking—and often preventable. The patrol vehicle had its emergency lights activated, and the officer was carrying out his duty to assist a stranded motorist.
Yet according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), roughly 800 pedestrians are killed each year on U.S. interstates and freeways. Alarmingly, about 18 percent of those fatalities involve individuals near disabled vehicles.
While the official investigation into the crash is ongoing, legal experts emphasize the importance of a thorough, independent review.
“In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview important witnesses, analyze any surveillance video from the scene, and obtain phone and texting records of the liable party,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst for The Legal Advocate.
Bond noted that experienced legal teams play a vital role in uncovering the full scope of what happened and ensuring that accountability and justice follow such devastating losses.
WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM
As the investigation into the fatal crash on the 405 Freeway continues, the family of Jesus Garcia may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. These claims can help provide compensation for loss of companionship, emotional distress, and the financial impact that often follows a sudden, tragic loss.
“We understand that losing a loved one is not only a deeply emotional loss but also an economic one,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.
“If you have lost a loved one due to someone else’s negligence, contact a wrongful death attorney and get the guidance needed to obtain the justice you deserve,” Bond added.
