East Hampton Fatal DWI Accident June 15th; Scarleth S. Urgiles Killed in CrashScarleth S. Urgiles, 19, tragically died Sunday night in an East Hampton crash involving a suspected drunk driver.

Another passenger, Jennifer Amon-Barrers, 18, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment. The driver, Luis Gonzalo Barrionuevo-Fuertes, also 18, now faces multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated (DWI), aggravated DWI with a child under 16 in the vehicle, and endangering the welfare of a child.

The incident is being investigated under Leandra’s Law, a New York statute named after a child killed by a drunk driver in 2009.

DWI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Despite public awareness and stricter penalties, impaired driving continues to lead to heartbreaking consequences. According to the NHTSA, around 30 people die each day in the U.S. due to alcohol-related crashes, making up nearly 29% of all traffic fatalities.

Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, emphasized that drivers responsible for such crashes can face not only criminal charges but also civil liability.

“In addition to facing prosecution, those who drive under the influence may also be held legally accountable in civil court,” Bond said. “Families deserve answers, justice, and the support necessary to move forward.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

As the investigation continues, the family of Scarleth S. Urgiles may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit, which could cover funeral expenses, emotional suffering, and loss of companionship.

A representative, Of Counsel at Bond Legal, added, “These cases are not only about accountability but also about helping grieving families recover some measure of stability after immense personal loss.”

Meanwhile, Jennifer Amon-Barrers may also be eligible to file a personal injury claim for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and ongoing treatment.
