Crash at 82nd and Bancroft avenues claims life in Oakland, officials report

OAKLAND, CA, (July 07, 2025) - A woman was tragically killed in a hit-and-run crash Monday night in Oakland. The victim, identified by family members as 59-year-old Rose Marie Banks, died after being struck by a vehicle while walking in a marked crosswalk.

Hit-and-run PosterRose Marie Banks, 59, was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver Monday night in Oakland, according to a news release.

The fatal incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. near the intersection of Bancroft and 82nd avenues. According to Oakland police, an unknown vehicle was traveling westbound on Bancroft Avenue when it struck Banks, who was crossing in the marked crosswalk. The vehicle fled the scene before authorities arrived.

Banks, a local resident, was transported to a nearby hospital where she sadly succumbed to her injuries.

Police have yet to make any arrests. Banks’ loved ones are pleading for justice and urging anyone with information to contact Oakland Police Traffic Investigation Unit at (510) 777-8570.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Even a minute's delay in medical attention after a serious crash can cost a life. Leaving the scene helps no one — not the victim, and not the driver. An average of 682,000 hit-and-run crashes have occurred annually since 2006. Nearly 65 percent of those killed in hit-and-runs were pedestrians or bicyclists, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a hit-and-run case and prove negligence,” said Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“Each case is unique and must be investigated thoroughly. Time is of the essence in cases such as this and the family of the victim must ensure that evidence is reviewed in an efficient manner,” added Bond, a national analyst for The Legal Advocate. “The driver always has to take great care behind the wheel.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Rose Marie Banks may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Family members of victims in such tragic incidents may seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional distress, pain and suffering, and funeral expenses.

“The stress and sorrow can be incredibly overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“We understand what families are forced to endure, and it’s crucial that their rights are protected,” Bond added. “A wrongful death attorney can remain closely involved in the investigation and work to safeguard the family’s best interests throughout the legal process.”
