Good Samaritan, two drivers killed in crash on Highway 395 just south of the Bass Hill landfill, officials say

SUSANVILLE, CA, (January 30, 2025) - A head-on collision involving multiple vehicles followed by a driver who stopped to help being hit by a car left three people dead in Susanville early Thursday morning, according to the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office.

police lights car crashRaymond Edward White, a 67-year-old Janesville resident, was killed as a result of a motor vehicle accident along Highway 395 in Susanville early Thursday morning, per the sheriff's office.

One of the fatality victims was identified as 67-year-old Janesville resident Raymond Edward White.

A preliminary investigation found that a grey Dodge Durango was traveling southbound on Highway 395 just south of the Bass Hill landfill around 5:40 a.m. when its driver—a 46-year-old from Susanville—attempted to pass a semi-truck. While doing so, the Dodge's driver crashed head-on into White's Toyota 4Runner in the opposite lane. Tragically, both drivers died as a result of injuries, officials said.

A driver, also from Susanville, age 52, pulled over to assist the victims. Sadly, he was hit and killed by a car traveling northbound on the highway.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding was the primary cause of fatal crashes in 2018, followed by the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication; failure to stay in the proper lane; failure to yield the right of way; and distracted driving.

While the cause and liability of the crash are being investigated, Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, said that it is imperative to have an independent investigation conducted by a seasoned attorney.

“In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview important witnesses, analyze any surveillance video from the scene of the crash, and obtain phone and texting records of the liable party,” said Bond.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family members of Raymond Edward White may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident.

“We understand that losing a loved one is not only a deeply emotional loss but also an economic one,” said Bond, a national analyst for Newsline.

“If you have lost a loved one due to someone else’s negligence, contact a wrongful death attorney and get the guidance needed to obtain the justice you deserve.”
