A tragic accident in Vancouver left a father dead and his 6-year-old son critically injured on Wednesday. Jose “Pequi” Quevedo-Sanchez and his son Joshua “Joshy” Quevedo were struck by a vehicle driven by 73-year-old James H. Paulson around 1:20 p.m. on Northeast 137th Avenue.
Quevedo-Sanchez was pronounced dead at the scene, while Joshua was found about 10 feet away in a ditch and transported to Randall Children’s Hospital in Portland in critical condition.
Jose “Pequi” Quevedo-Sanchez was fatally struck by an alleged intoxicated driver on Wednesday in Vancouver.
Paulson was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide and DUI. Investigators cited reckless driving, speed, and possible impairment as factors in the crash.
A GoFundMe page confirmed the victims were father and son.
FATAL PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION
Intoxicated drivers often hit pedestrians because alcohol impairs judgment, slows reaction time, and reduces coordination. These effects make it harder for drivers to react to traffic changes and avoid hitting pedestrians.
Sadly, 12,429 people died in alcohol-impaired driving traffic deaths in 2023.
These crashes all have one thing in common: They were all preventable, as driving under the influence puts everyone on the road at risk. Candice Bond, an experienced DUI accident attorney, was interviewed and provided her thoughts on such incidents.
“Separate from criminal charges, a victim’s family may be entitled to compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst for Newsline. “Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide grieving families during this difficult time, protecting their legal rights while ensuring that drunk drivers are held accountable for their reckless actions.”
WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM
Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Jose “Pequi” Quevedo-Sanchez may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Such a claim can cover medical and funeral expenses, loss of love and companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.
“Wrongful death occurs when someone’s negligent or wrongful actions lead to the death of another person,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal. “In cases where a fatality results from unsafe driving, distracted behavior, speeding, or driving under the influence, the victim’s family often has the right to pursue a civil claim against the responsible driver,” Bond added.
