Saturday night collision happened along South Belt Line Road
GRAND PRAIRIE, TX, (August 10, 2024) - On Saturday night, a fatal crash occurred in Grand Prairie that authorities are attributing to street racing.
Jaime Mesa was arrested in connection with an alleged street racing crash that left four people dead in Grand Prairie.
Emergency personnel responded to a collision on South Belt Line Road at around 8 p.m., where they discovered a red Dodge Charger with front end damage and a Chevrolet Traverse overturned and on fire.
Witnesses reported seeing the Charger racing another vehicle when it collided with the SUV, resulting in a loud explosion and rapid ignition of the vehicle.
Tragically, three individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, while two others were transported to the hospital in critical condition. One of those injured later passed away from injuries.
The driver of the red Dodge, identified as 20-year-old Jaime Mesa from Irving, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was detained by police at the hospital.
According to authorities, Mesa was allegedly racing against a white Dodge Charger Daytona heading southbound on Belt Line. The Chevrolet was traveling northbound and attempted a left turn onto Kingston Drive when it was struck by the red car.
Mesa is facing numerous charges including four counts of racing on a highway causing death and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. On Sunday night, police arrested the driver of the second vehicle involved in the race, identified as 22-year-old Anthony Morales.
Currently, the identities of the victims have not been disclosed as the investigation is still in progress.
CRASH INVESTIGATION
“It is imperative to come to a determination of the exact cause of these types of accidents. An attorney has the resources to review applicable insurance coverage, hire expert witnesses, run background checks, and locate witnesses. We carefully guide the family of the victim through the process,” said Candice Bond, a managing partner with Bond Legal.
She noted that, in cases such as this, an independent investigation is crucial to preserve evidence.
“In addition to a police report, an attorney will carefully review what may have contributed to the crash,” said Bond. “A lawyer has the resources to hire expert witnesses, conduct drivers’ background checks, locate witnesses to the crash and review applicable insurance coverage. Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help guide an injury victim through what can be a complicated process.”
WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM
Pending the results of any investigations, the family of a victim may pursue a wrongful death claim. Survivors of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident such as this.
Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal, said, “Grieving families of victims are sometimes overwhelmed by the legal processes that are in place to protect their rights. An attorney can be a valuable and compassionate resource to help guide a family during this difficult time and ensure that those left behind receive the restitution they are entitled to.”
