Investigators said the crash happened about 5:17 p.m. on Otay Lakes Road, just west of State Route 94, when Araiza’s van struck an SUV head-on.

The medical examiner reported that Araiza suffered fatal blunt force injuries.

Officials said the case is still under investigation, and no further information has been made available.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

When vehicles collide head-on at their combined speeds, the resulting impact force is typically severe and can potentially lead to catastrophic injuries or death. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that 39,345 people died in traffic crashes in 2024.

Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, said in cases such as this, it is imperative to have an independent probe conducted into the crash by a seasoned lawyer to protect the rights of the victim’s family.

“Time is of the essence in cases such as this, and the family of the victim must ensure that evidence is reviewed efficiently,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes needed to help piece together what happened. All of these resources are necessary for helping clients receive monetary compensation for damages or a loss following a collision,” said Bond.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Gilbert Araiza may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident such as this incident.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“We understand just what families are forced to go through, and having their rights protected is vital.”
