According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the accident occurred around 6:10 p.m. on Dec. 30. Church was struck by a Buick LaCrosse while lying in the westbound lanes near the intersection of State Route 668. A second unidentified vehicle hit him and fled the scene.

Church was transported to Genesis Hospital in Zanesville, where he succumbed to his injuries. The investigation into the hit-and-run continues.
