Pedestrian Struck in Collision on Highway 99 Sunday Afternoon
FRESNO, CA, (September 21, 2025) - Fresno authorities are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that killed 10-year-old Corday Brown on Sunday afternoon.
Corday Brown tragically died after being hit by a truck on the Highway 99 off-ramp in Fresno Sunday afternoon.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Brown was hit by a truck just after 4 p.m. near the Cesar Chavez Boulevard off-ramp on Highway 99. The truck was southbound and attempting to take the off-ramp when investigators say approximately 10 children were playing in the fast lane. The driver tried to avoid them but struck Brown.
Brown received CPR at the scene and was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. CHP continues to investigate the incident.
PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION
California recorded 1,069 pedestrian fatalities in 2023, the highest total in the nation and representing approximately 25% of all traffic deaths statewide, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. The state has led the country in pedestrian deaths for five consecutive years.
The California Highway Patrol reports that pedestrian fatalities increased 9% from 2022 to 2023. Los Angeles County alone accounts for nearly 40% of the state's pedestrian deaths, followed by San Diego, Orange, and Riverside counties, which combine for another 25% of fatalities.
The Governors Highway Safety Association says one reason for the increase is many people are driving SUVs and pickups and it's harder for them to see pedestrians. This is part of a national trend that's seen a nearly 60% increase in pedestrian fatalities since 2013.
“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all possible contributing factors considered and examined,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.
“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes needed to help piece together what happened. All of these resources are necessary for helping clients receive monetary compensation for damages or a loss following a collision,” said Bond, an experienced pedestrian attorney.
WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM
“It is almost always a driver’s responsibility to yield to pedestrians,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. The family of Corday Brown may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim.
“Relatives of wrongful death victims can seek compensation for loss of income and companionship, pain and suffering, funeral expenses, and emotional distress following a tragic accident,” Bond explained.
An attorney can serve as an advocate, guiding families through this difficult time while ensuring their legal rights are protected.
“Insurance companies often attempt to pressure families into accepting a quick settlement far below the case’s true value,” Bond added. “A skilled attorney will advocate vigorously to ensure the family is treated with respect and receives fair compensation.”
