Why Do These Accidents Happen on Snowy Roads?

Winter weather often leads to hazardous driving conditions, increasing the risk of collisions with pedestrians or stopped vehicles. Key contributors include slippery surfaces, reduced visibility, and drivers exceeding safe speeds.

Speeding in Poor ConditionsDrivers not adjusting to the weather, leading to skidsInsurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)

Distracted DrivingFailure to notice stopped vehicles or peopleNational Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

Pedestrian deaths in motor vehicle crashes have risen 78% in recent years, comprising 18% of all traffic fatalities, per IIHS data.

National legal analysts emphasize the importance of thorough investigations in pedestrian collision cases to establish liability and support recovery efforts.

“A motor vehicle driver can avoid crashes involving pedestrians—who are more likely to get hurt—by staying alert, traveling at safe speeds, especially when roads are wet and snowy, and following pedestrian safety laws,” said Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal.

  • Right-of-Way Rules: Pedestrians generally have priority in crosswalks or intersections, requiring drivers to yield.
  • Investigation Essentials: Factors like road conditions, signage, and lighting must be analyzed to prove negligence.
  • Justice for Victims: Proper resources help families secure deserved compensation after such tragedies.

“Injured victims involved in a collision often seek a personal injury claim to cover the cost of medical bills, future medical care, loss of income, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal.

Analysts note that insurance providers may minimize claims, underscoring the value of legal guidance in these situations.
