Senseless Oct. 5 collision left teenage victim paralyzed
October 05, 2024 | Rancho Cucamonga, CA
A police pursuit on Oct. 5 ended in a two-vehicle crash in the Inland Empire, leaving six people hospitalized. The incident began when Fontana Police responded to a call after another law enforcement agency lost a suspect during a chase.
Around 9:30 p.m., officers located the suspect’s vehicle near Etiwanda Avenue and Foothill Boulevard in Rancho Cucamonga. The driver was speeding and ran a red light, ultimately crashing into another vehicle, which was an Uber ride. Inside the Uber were 15-year-old Aadan Portillo and three friends who were on their way to get food.
GoFundMeAadan Portillo was left paralyzed after the Uber ride he was in was struck by another vehicle that ran a red light while being pursued in Rancho Cucamonga.
All six individuals involved in the crash were hospitalized, with Aadan sustaining the most serious injuries. Ultimately, he was paralyzed. The two occupants of the suspect’s vehicle were also among those injured. The suspect was arrested at the scene.
In response to the incident, a fundraiser has been set up to help support the victim.
CRASH INVESTIGATION
“It is imperative to determine the exact cause of these types of accidents. An attorney has the resources to review applicable insurance coverage, hire expert witnesses, run background checks, and locate witnesses. We carefully guide the family of the victim through the process,” said Candice Bond, a managing partner with Bond Legal.
She noted that, in cases such as this, an independent investigation is crucial to preserve evidence.
“In addition to a police report, an attorney will carefully review what may have contributed to the crash,” said Bond. “A lawyer has the resources to hire expert witnesses, conduct drivers’ background checks, locate witnesses to the crash and review applicable insurance coverage. Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help guide an injury victim through what can be a complicated process.”
WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM
Pending the results of any investigations, the family of Aadan Portillo may pursue a wrongful death claim. Survivors of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident such as this.
Bond said, “Grieving families of victims are sometimes overwhelmed by the legal processes that are in place to protect their rights. An attorney can be a valuable and compassionate resource to help guide a family during this difficult time and ensure that those left behind receive the restitution they are entitled to.”
